About the Artist:
Jee Hoon Stark was born in Incheon, South Korea. At a young age, he moved to Iowa where he grew up and later studied Architecture at Iowa State University. Jee Hoon began his drawings and paintings using architectural drafting as a background and inspiration. After graduating, he traveled to New York City, Honolulu, Munich, Seoul, and Tokyo to work and pursue his own works. He is a self-taught painter and has been active for over fifteen years. He now lives and works in both New York and Iowa.
About the Show:
Matchbook Paintings were inspired from the workshop I participated in Tokyo last year. I was invited to work with an incredible miniature artisan to learn and create three-dimensional small worlds. It was an uplifting experience in both mentally and physically. Afterward, I began working with small paintings/drawings and the results became many series of intricate paintings on matchbooks. It is an on going project, which I would like to continue to experiment with different techniques and methods for piecing small worlds.
